Cambridge Centre for Attachment

Trainers

Dr Grey and Ms Kesteven are experienced trainers and presenters, having trained psychologists, social workers, lawyers, therapists, residential workers and other mental health professionals in the assessment of attachment and parenting. They have trained across the UK, as well as Ireland, and presented at many conferences in the UK and abroad.

The Meaning of the Child Interview has proved to be one of the most powerful and informative clinical tools used in our clinical practice, and has helped make sense of some very complex cases. Dr Grey and Juliet Kesteven have a particularly engaging and effective teaching style, and a generous approach to sharing their extensive clinical and academic knowledge and experience. I would highly recommend attending training and seminars at the CCA. Dr Emma Hunnisett, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Child and Family Psychology Clinic, Norwich

Training in the Meaning of the Child Interview

CCA is also the home of training and further research on the Meaning of the Child Interview, initially developed and validated as part of Dr Grey's doctoral research. CCA currently train professionals from different disciplines, for local authorities and voluntary organisations, nationally. Further information about the MotC, and training available in using it, can be found on the procedure's own website, meaningofthechild.org.

The MotC training was pivotal in increasing my knowledge of both attachment and the assessment of psychological risks posed to a child by their parent. The MotC training is thought provoking for any social worker, and gives a good introduction to attachment theory and trauma. Barry Tilzey, Consultant Practice Development Lead, London Borough of Wandsworth
One of the key changes to my practice is thinking about who the driving force of change within any intervention should be, whether this be the child or parent or both. I would certainly recommend the training to those who wish to understand risk in areas of parent and child work. Dr Satbinder Kaur Bhogal, Clinical Psychologist, Birmingham

Attachment in the family courts

CCA also offer training on the assessment of attachment for the family courts. Dr Grey has been involved as part of the International Association for the Study of Attachment in developing a protocol for assessing attachment in family court proceedings, and is a co-author of the paper published out of this work (Crittenden et al. 2013). Dr Grey is also involved in an ongoing study with Dr Crittenden of the use of the Adult Attachment Interview in court and clinical settings, currently published as a poster to two international conferences.

Other subjects

Dr Grey and Ms Kesteven are available as trainers on subjects such as adult and child attachment, child development, assessment of attachment and parenting, sibling relationships, and attachment issues in fostering, adoption, and parental contact. Please contact CCA directly for further information.

I am a social worker and have worked in child protection for all of my career of 15 years and have completed a lot of training over the course of my social work career. I completed the MotC training with Dr Grey about two years ago and I loved every minute of it. It challenged me in how I thought, how I assessed families and parents, and how I interpreted the information. The MotC interview has given me a structured and focused assessment which has enabled me to explore the relationship between the parent and child. It has given me more confidence as a professional. I cannot believe what wealth of information I have gathered using the MotC interview. I would genuinely and wholeheartedly recommend this training for everyone who works with families.
